Mountain Biking Imlil and Toubkal: Where to Ride in the High Atlas

Few places pack so much mountain biking into such a small area as Imlil. The village sits high in the Atlas, a short drive from Marrakech, beneath Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa. Mountain biking Imlil starts with a simple idea: leave the heat of the city at breakfast and be on a mountain trail by lunchtime.

Why mountain biking Imlil works so well

Imlil is the gateway to Toubkal National Park and the start of an old network of mule tracks that link villages, terraced fields and walnut groves. Those same paths make superb riding. You are never far from a stream, a view or a glass of mint tea.

It also makes logistics easy. Hotels and guesthouses are used to cyclists, a support vehicle can meet you at high points, and you can ride a different loop every day without changing hotel.

The terrain

Expect rocky mule paths, loose singletrack, stony valley tracks and the occasional steep, technical section. Climbs can be long and sustained; descents are fast and fun but demand attention on loose gravel and water-worn rocks. This is not smooth, groomed trail riding: it is real mountain terrain.

The summit of Toubkal itself is a hiking objective, so think of the mountain as a backdrop: most riding takes place in the valleys, on the passes and on the ridges around it.

Types of ride

  • Village loops: a few hours between neighbouring valleys, with tea and lunch in a family house
  • Pass crossings: longer days over mountain passes into the next valley
  • Multi-day trips: several days, moving between guesthouses

For a taste of all three, our Atlas Singletrack Week is built around Imlil and the nearby Ouirgane valley, and our two-day Imlil valley ride is a good first step.

Which bike?

A trail or cross-country mountain bike with good brakes and wide, grippy tyres is the sensible choice. If climbs worry you, an e-bike removes the hardest effort and keeps mixed groups together: read about e-bike tours in Morocco, or try the Ourika Valley e-bike adventure.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Winter can bring snow, ice and cold, and some tracks may be blocked, while midsummer is hot in the valleys. Our season guide helps you pick.

Riding respectfully

The tracks pass through working villages. Greet people, slow down near houses and animals, close gates, take your rubbish away and ask before taking photos of people. These small habits are why welcome stays warm.
