Agafay Desert Gravel: A Day Ride from Marrakech

Many first-time visitors to Morocco want a taste of the desert without giving up a week to reach it. The Agafay is the answer: a stony plateau a short drive from Marrakech, where the city fades behind you and the horizon opens up. For Agafay desert gravel, it is hard to beat.

Agafay desert gravel: what the Agafay is (and isn’t)

Forget the postcard dunes. The Agafay is a stony desert: pale hills, dry riverbeds, scattered shrubs and long, empty tracks, with the snowy High Atlas often visible in the distance. It looks like another planet, and that is exactly why riders love it.

Distances are short and the terrain is forgiving, so it suits strong beginners as well as experienced riders who want a relaxed day. If you want the real dunes, that is a longer trip: see Marrakech to the Sahara by bike.

The riding

Expect firm dirt, patches of loose stones, dry stream crossings and short, punchy climbs rather than long mountain passes. The tracks are wide, so you can ride side by side and chat. Tracks cross each other in many directions, which is why a local guide or a trusted GPX route matters: it is easy to wander into a dead end.

Which bike?

A gravel bike is ideal: fast enough on the smoother stretches and comfortable on rough ground. Fit 40–45 mm tubeless tyres, because small thorns and sharp stones are common. A mountain bike works too, just slower. Our road, gravel or MTB guide explains the trade-offs, and our gravel bike tours show what we ride elsewhere in Morocco.

Choosing your season and time

The desert is at its best from autumn to spring. Start early: the light is soft, the temperature is comfortable and the tracks are quiet. In summer the stony ground reflects heat, and a midday ride is a bad idea. Read the best time to cycle Morocco before you fix your date.

Season What to expect
Autumn Warm days, clear light, comfortable early starts
Winter Cool mornings, crisp air, snow on the far Atlas peaks
Spring Mild, with a touch of green after rain
Summer Very hot: only at dawn, or avoid

What to bring

  • Sun protection, sunglasses and a light long-sleeved top
  • At least two bottles of water, plus electrolytes
  • A windproof for early mornings, and spare tubes or a plug kit
  • Offline maps: signal comes and goes (see our packing list)

Make a day of it

A typical day starts with a hotel pick-up in Marrakech, a short transfer to the plateau, a morning of riding with a break for mint tea, a simple lunch in the desert, and a gentle afternoon before returning to the city. If you have another day, the nearby lake of Lalla Takerkoust is a pleasant, easy ride: see our Lalla Takerkoust lake e-bike ride.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Agafay desert sandy like the Sahara?

No. The Agafay is a stony desert of pale hills, dry riverbeds and firm tracks, not an area of tall sand dunes. That is why it suits gravel bikes so well.

How far is the Agafay desert from Marrakech?

It is a short drive from the city, so a full riding day fits easily between city visits. Your operator picks you up at your hotel and drives you to the start.

Do I need to be very fit for an Agafay gravel ride?

No. The terrain is mostly rolling with short climbs, so a regular rider can enjoy it. Choose a shorter loop if you are a beginner, and always start early to avoid the heat.
