Cycling in Marrakech: Medina Rides, the Palmeraie and Day Trips

Marrakech looks chaotic on a first visit, and many travellers assume cycling is out of the question. In fact, cycling in Marrakech can be one of the most rewarding ways to see the city: you move faster than on foot, you see more than from a taxi, and you can slip into quiet corners that tour buses never reach. The trick is to choose the right time and the right place.

When to go cycling in Marrakech

Early morning is the key. Before about nine, the streets are calmer, the light is soft and the temperature is comfortable. By late morning, traffic, heat and crowds build, and the narrow lanes of the medina become busy with mopeds, carts and pedestrians. Avoid midday riding in summer.

Where to ride

The medina, early

At dawn the old city is a different place: shopkeepers opening their shutters, bakers, a quiet square. A guided early ride is the best way to enjoy it, because a local guide knows which lanes are calm and which to avoid. Our partners at Marrakech By Bike run easy medina rides for exactly this.

The Palmeraie

North of the city, the Palmeraie is a huge palm grove with sandy and dirt tracks, irrigation channels and a rural feel, only minutes from the centre. It is ideal for a relaxed half-day ride and a good test of a mountain or gravel bike.

Menara and Gueliz

The Menara gardens, with their olive groves and large basin, are a pleasant, mostly flat place to ride. In Gueliz, the modern district, the streets are wider and easier, although traffic is still busy.

Dealing with city traffic

Traffic is dense and improvised: scooters weave, pedestrians cross anywhere and drivers communicate with horns. Ride predictably, hold your line, signal early, wear a helmet and use lights. Dedicated cycle lanes are limited. Our safety tips explain how to stay relaxed and safe.

Day trips: the real riding starts outside town

If you want proper riding, leave the city. Within an hour or so you reach very different terrain:

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to cycle in Marrakech?

Yes, with care. Ride early, stay predictable, wear a helmet and use lights. The medina lanes and busy junctions need extra attention, so many visitors choose a guided ride.

What is the best time of day to cycle in Marrakech?

Early morning is best: traffic is lighter, the light is soft and the temperature is comfortable. Avoid the middle of the day, especially in summer.

Where can I ride away from the traffic?

The Palmeraie palm grove and the Menara gardens are good quiet options. For serious riding, take a day trip to the Agafay desert, the Atlas foothills or Imlil.
